Black Jobless Rate Was More Than Double the White Rate

(TriceEdneyWire.com) - The Black unemployment rate was much higher compared than the White jobless rate in April as non-farm employment increased by 428,000, which was unchanged from March at 3.6 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.

However, nonfarm employment was down 1.2 million, or 0.8 percent, from its pre-pandemic levels in February 2020.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the jobless rate for Blacks was 5.9 percent, compared with Whites at 3.2 percent. The jobless rate for Asians was 3.1 percent and for Hispanics, it was 4.1 percent. 

Job gains occurred in leisure,hospitality, manufacturing, transportation, and warehousing. In April, 1.7 million persons reported who were unable to work because their employer lost business or closed their business during the pandemic. Some 19 percent of workers received at least some compensation from their employers for hours not worked.
